Galactose catabolism

The Leloir-route chemistry that converts galactose-derived carbon into glucose-phosphate intermediates. 6 reactions, from Reactome R-HSA-70370.

  1. GALK1 phosphorylates Gal to Gal1PATP + alpha-D-Gal → ADP + Gal1P + H+
  2. GALT transfers UMP from UDP-Glc to Gal1P to form UDP-GalUDP-Glc + Gal1P → G1P + UDP-Gal
  3. GALE:NAD+ dimer reversibly epimerises UDP-Gal to UDP-GlcUDP-Gal → UDP-Glc
  4. PGM1:Mg2+ isomerises G1P to G6PG1P → G6P
  5. AKR1B1 reduces galactose to galactitolalpha-D-Gal + H+ + NADPH → galactitol + NADP+
  6. GALM converts beta-D-GAL to alpha-D-GALbeta-D-Gal → alpha-D-Gal
